It’s called the house with a heart, and we believe there couldn’t be a better description. A family member has a medical emergency and you’re suddenly miles from home in a strange hospital. After an emotionally exhausting day, you hear about the Atlanta Hospital Hospitality House and you go there apprehensive and totally stressed, yet too tired to even dream of relaxing.
The first thing you see as you approach the house is a welcoming light in the window. You’re met at the door with a smile and a warm hello, not to mention the wonderful aroma of dinner simmering on the stove. Even though you haven’t thought about food all day, you make your way to the kitchen where you find one of the resident managers, Carolyn, Chuck or Kay, putting the finishing touches on a hot meal. You find yourself helping and realize it feels good to be doing something with your hands. You even discover it’s rewarding to be doing something " normal."
Then you’re seated at the table sharing dinner with new-found friends. You find yourself laughing and enjoying the company so much, you relax even more.
After dinner you might help clean up the kitchen, watch TV, work on a jigsaw puzzle, or just enjoy a good book in the library. Sometimes it feels good to just sit and share a good conversation with another guest or take care of laundry. You might take a walk in the garden and enjoy the peaceful surroundings, taking time to admire the grand architecture of the Woolford mansion.
After a refreshing shower you tumble into bed feeling so much better because you know you’ll be able to face another long, stressful day at the hospital after having your needs so caringly met.
Those of us who call the AHHH home from time to time are extremely blessed to have found our way here. We’re also profoundly grateful for the generosity of caring patrons whose donations and volunteering at the house keep the heart beat strong and welcoming. Thank you from grateful guests. God Bless!
