Since 1981 the Atlanta Hospital Hospitality House (AHHH) has quietly been
serving a special group of individuals. The Hospitality House has strived
to provide a "home away from home" to outpatients and caregivers of patients
hospitalized in an Atlanta area hospital.
We offer lodging, meals, supportive companionship, and other needs and ask our guests to only make a donation of $10.00 per night. AHHH is a fully independent non-profit organization.
During our history we have served over 20,000 families and individuals with
a wide range of medical conditions, including many types of cardiovascular
problems, cancer, tuberculosis, transplants, and other medical afflictions.
The Atlanta Hospital Hospitality House accommodates anyone as long as they
have been referred by the hospital chaplain's or social worker's office and
live 40 miles outside of Atlanta.
We also will accommodate guests who are not immediate family members, often
times we accommodate aunts, uncles, cousins, close family friends and even
ministers. We work together with the above facilities to provide lodging
when they are full. For over 20 years we have made a difference in the lives
of individuals who have nowhere else to turn for much needed assistance.
We currently provide service to patients and family members at 21 area hospitals
including; Emory University Hospital, the Veterans Administration Medical
Center, Crawford Long Hospital, Regency Hospital - Atlanta, Radiotherapy
Clinics of Georgia, Dekalb Medical Center, Kennestone Hospital, Shepherd
Center, Grady Medical Center, Crawford Long, Kindred Hospital and the Atlanta
Medical Center.
The House is staffed on a 24-hour basis. Individuals with family members who are extremely ill often remain at the hospital during most of the day and overnight. These individuals are welcome to use the House during the day to rest, bathe, do laundry, have dinner, watch television, call relatives back home, or just relax and visit. Individuals are permitted to stay as long as the patient or outpatient is receiving treatment at an area hospital. The average length of stay is six days, but stays range from one night to several months.
Historically, contributions from businesses, foundations, churches, civic
and veteran's organizations, individuals, guests and former guests, as well
as fundraising events, have fully supported our budget. We are very proud
that approximately 15% of our operating budget comes from guests and former
guests.
The House spends approximately $44 per guest per day. If a guest were staying
in a local hotel, eating out and incurring other expenses related to out-of-town
living, they would be spending an average of $185.00 per night. We provide
an incredible service to individuals who otherwise would be placed in an
extremely difficult financial position when they are already having a health-related
crisis. In healthcare today, patients whether insured or not receive medical
care while the burden of expenses incurred while caring for their loved ones
falls on the family. Without our help, these individuals would be forced
to sleep in waiting rooms.
We are honored to play a part in the health and welfare of others. Please
continue to support our mission and keep us in your prayers that we can remain
a "home away from home" for
those in need.
